D'Utama TMC Speakers' Night on the 29th September

A collection of my thoughts over the meeting on the 29th of September 2011. *takes a deep breath*

Once every 3 months, 6 speakers, 6 evaluators and one team with one goal come together to the D’Utama Toastmasters’ Club Speakers’ Night and the 29thof September was one such night. In the pursuit of better public speaking and leadership skills, 22 dedicated individuals came together to make this meeting a success.

The theme of the meeting was The Melting Pot Called Malaysia in remembrance with Malaysia Day which was held earlier on the 16th of September. We started with the usual singing of the Negaraku before we moved on to the Presidential Speech by our Acting President who is none other than our VPM Hoo Sze Ling. Despite her repeated denials that she was nervous, she pulled off the speech wowing the audience and reminding that we should be thankful for all of the public holidays we have in Malaysia. She then passed the time to me for my opening speech as the TME. Butterflies were still floating in my stomach despite all of my preparations but nonetheless, I refuse to let fear compromise who I am and I delivered my speech with passion and fire.

The meeting continued with the energy level raised a notch when our Teh Tarik for the Soul speaker Lee Wei Seong took the stage. He reminded us of the importance of loving ourselves and encouraged us to hold fast in our Toastmasters journey. The meeting then continued with the prepared speech session where the audience was entertained by 6 speakers in different stages of their Toastmasters journey. Their evaluators then proceeded to point various areas which they need to improve. This meeting was different from our regular meetings because we had an open evaluation session members of the floor could give their evaluation to each speaker.

One thing which we are constantly reminded of in our Toastmasters journey is that we are always learning no matter how good we perceive ourselves to be. Through this meeting I learnt how to deal with setbacks during the meeting and to remain cool under fire. I am thankful to my mentor for his advice and to the team that helped me to make this meeting a success, I honor you. No matter where we are, who we deal with or how hard we fall, I leave you with this phrase, Semper Fi, Always Faithful. Stand firm and stand tall.
