As the former Vice President of Membership (during the term 2006/2007), I thought my duty was finally accomplished. Hence, I opted for an early retirement from the Club’s executive committee board and wanted to take the back seat and enjoyed my usual lifestyle as a “normal Toastmasters member”.

Back then, I remembered Yap Chean Sheong was elected to be the Vice President of Education (VPE) of 2007/2008. Without any shadow of doubt, I have absolute confident in his managerial capability and leadership to do a good job. Nevertheless, something happened along the way. Due to Yap’s work commitment where he is required to be posted to Norway, he has but to relinquish his position as the VPE.

It was a lost to D’Utama Toastmasters (DUTM) Club of knowing that a precious member is leaving us for someone’s gain. However life must still go on… So was there a replacement to fill in the void before the next term (2007/2008) begins in July 2007; within less than two weeks? In fact, there was no plan B to expect the unexpected!

In the end, our past president Lee Wei Seong gently asked yours truly, “Are you ready to continue?” Hmm… on one hand, I was about to celebrate my freedom from responsibility and apparently the ghost of the executive committee board (still) refused to release me… not yet perhaps! It was difficult for me to decline or ignore the urgency that the Club requires of my immediate attention; at the eleven hour! Therefore, I took up the post gladly and willingly as the newly substitute VPE for DUTM.

Once I have plunged into the vortex, it was a point of no turning back. As the VPE, there were many challenges and obstacles to face head-on and solutions are demanded on the silver platter. To name a few, I need to satisfy the members’ insatiable hunger for assignment speaking slots, undertaking the Club’s annual workshops and/or projects (for example; Speechcraft and Youth Leadership program), arranged and managed the annual Toastmasters’ contest, and checked and re-checked that every monthly regular meeting the role players are fully occupied.

The Hercules task was fantastically a tall order and I felt exhausted physically, mentally and sometimes psychologically. Because apart from Toastmasters, I have to juggle my day job; which is equally essential and very important to achieve my boss excruciating demands. However, it was ironic that despite the bitter sweet journey that I have had gone through, I felt in love with what I was doing (for the Club) and I’m lovin’ it!

Though my role as the VPE is far from perfection and maybe unable to fulfill every member’s requirements or the Club’s expectation, I humbly seek for everyone’s pardon and forgiveness – for I’m just a man with limitations. Before the curtain is drawn to close this old chapter, I would like to take this opportunity to say, “Thank you” to all who have shown encouragement and given the support in whatever I do – for the love of this humble Club.

A moment to ponder, if it was not for the wind of change that has taken place – in the beginning, I asked myself, where would I be or what was I doing? Perhaps I would be a normal Toastmasters member, taking the back seat and be left unknown and unheard at one lonely, dark corner of this world.

Installation Night 2008 (III)

Starry, starry night
Don your PJs in bright array
Bring your stories, cheer and dance to the DJ
As we sing, toast, have fun and play...

Ladies and gentlemen...

The D'Utama Toastmasters Club Installation Night is just around the corner.

No beating around the bush this time
Come one, come all, let's gather and spend your dime
For a worthy cause, an event not to be missed
Where we'll catch the 2007/08 EXCO's goodbye kiss

On a serious note, my friends, the details are as per attached.
(Please note that the event begins at 6pm; 30 minutes earlier than viewed on the ticket)

Food, warm smiles, loads of prizes, music (I hear Allen Kam's favourite song, "My Hump" is on the DJ's play list), an introduction to how happening Toastmasters are (you bet!) and you don't have to rent a costume (pyjamas, boxers, wear them all the time, right?) - 6 good reasons to attend! Why 6 and not (a round number) 10 reasons? Well, show up and give us 4 more!!!

We are looking at increasing the sales of tickets as they are selling very slowly. Let's pull together to make this a success and pull as many friends or family members along. Together, we'll have a blast!

For tickets / more information, please call / contact Calvin Lim at or visit

See you there!

Warm regards

Installation Night 2008 (I)

D'Utama Toastmasters Club will be having our Installation Nite 2007/2008 on 28th June 2008, Saturday.

Remember those days when we won something from the lucky draw, we were happy and some of us may be speechless. Even the door gifts were quite beautiful and cute to have and to cherish.

Why do we felt that way? Was it the feel-good-factor of having something from someone, though size doesn't matter? Or was it the sentimental or intrinsic value that we have uphold for it? Or perhaps it was just my lucky day?

Do you still want to have this pleasant moment to continue for this incoming Installation night?

The month of May 2008 have arrived and I'm still hopeful that someone out there would sponsor or find a sponsor to give away some prizes for the lucky draw and also the door gifts as well.

While we may have little time left, but nothing is impossible. Hence I appeal to every member (again) to assist me so that we can make it happen, once more.

Find Your Talent

It was a dark and stormy night... or was it? Oops... sorry maybe it was only a little storm brewing in the room of the ‘D’Utama Teacup’ prior to the start of Speaker’s Night. Being role-play free, I was oblivious to it all. Having found a seat, I sat down comfortably, relaxed and got into chat mode with our lovely guest. It was nice. I also knew I would enjoy listening to able members present their speeches later.

In a blink of an eye though, all that changed.
A gentle lady named Ooi Li Ann, graciously sidled up to my table and asked with a sense of urgency, “We need a TME to run the show. Can you help?” Feeling like a bolt of lightning had struck, I was momentarily stunned. Speechlessness pervaded which is rare for me! I looked at her pleading eyes. In a split second I had to make a choice. Would it be me saying “No, no, I’m not prepared, I’m really comfortable here,” or “Okay, this will be a challenge, if I can help…why not?”
Much to Li Ann’s relief I uttered the words, “Okay I’ll help.”

Now I was out of my comfort ZONE big time! I have to mention this because ‘normally’ if I decide to take on the role of TME I’m a person who plans weeks in advance, and I mean weeks, making sure I know the speakers and role-players etc. I would even have a script prepared to guide me through.

This was not the case. I knew zilch… or did I?
I had only 5 minutes to get ready... YIKES! Double Yikes in fact!
However, all was not lost. Glancing at the programme Calvin had prepared, I saw three little words jump back me ‘ FIND YOUR TALENT.’ Was this the night of discovery for me? What was my talent? Could I appear calm, cool and collect as I presented ‘Toastmasters’ to guests and fellow friends via impromptu style? A style I liked. And then again would I be diving into a dark hole of nothingness, Help!

Luckily the ‘gods were smiling upon me.’ I was backed by a formidable team of very capable and supportive role-players. Their smiles and nods were reassuring as I ploughed my way through the evening.
So what if I forgot the exact date when Toastmasters was formed…did it matter?
And when I had a few hiccups and slip-ups with pronouncing names… what could you do but laugh it off with Toastmaster friends.

My task was made all the more pleasant because no dark clouds of boredom formed on the horizon. The audience was kept at bay by the ‘golden rays of sunshine’ in the form of talented and brilliant speakers like TAN Geok Ann, Ooi Li Ann, Jessy Chahal, Johnson Yike, Vijay Balasagaram and Joanne TAN. They all spoke with conviction, confidence and had smooth deliveries captivating their listeners.

Fortunately, my trump card for the night was to have a compassionate General Evaluator Marcus Loi. He led his experienced speech evaluators Teoh Chun Ming, Henry Fu CL, G.Sivalingam, DTM ,Low Yat Seow DTM, and Allen Kam ATM-B with gusto while encouraging Yee Lai Heng and Ian Cheong on their dutuies.

When the evening was over, I felt really, really glad I attempted to do something I usually wouldn’t do? Opportunity knocked and I opened the door. I realized it’s easy staying in the ‘Safe train of COMFORT’, who doesn’t like that, but do we learn anything? By making a decision of riding the ‘Rollercoaster of Uncertainty’, by being the impromptu TME role allowed me to FIND a Talent I didn’t know existed. So make a choice everyone as you continue on your journey of Toastmasters. Challenge yourself on your next role-plays, impromptu or otherwise and discover your hidden talents with Toastmasters.
