TM Members Getaway - Fraser's Hill

A write up from Jack and Billy for the trip to Fraser's Hill:

Day 1 – 15th December 2012

Its an early Saturday morning at 7am we were already gathering in anticipation of the fun and thrills that awaits us in Fraser's. Yes that's right, we are heading to Fraser's hill . Along the way we stopped for a short break in the Restoran Jejantas at Sungai Buloh and then another break at Kuala Kubu Bharu. We had a challenging time keeping up with Bing's Car. Guess she can't wait to see the birds.

Upon arrival we started off walking in the “Hemmant” trail, Bing, of course, is our tour guide of the evening. It was a wet morning so we were careful on our steps. Bing pointed out some of the trees and flowers to us but I was taking my dose of fresh air, ahhh..  i'm so addicted, since we don't get it very often in the city.

After the wet walk we went to the “Bird interpretive center” to learn something about birds. Finally we checked in to our rooms at The Pines Resort. Part of the gang went to rest after a tiring journey, for those with energy, we went out for a walk along the roads. Much to my amazement, I learned that Tarantula does exist in Fraser’s Hill. They were furry and they liked to hide in their own burrows covered with some leaves to avoid disturbance. We managed to see only 1 live Tarantula but that was enough for me to boast to my friends.

Towards the evening, the fun began with funny games. Thanks to our fun loving toastmasters. Some silly guy suggested Twisters, I think that was me. So most of us had a very good stretch after the game and who would have guessed that Alice and Kerryn (Steven’s 2 kids) beat us all flat.

After dinner, we had another dose of game called “Taboo” where each team had to guess the correct word behind the card which is described out by the partner without using the word itself. 2nd game was the fun part; the “Mafia” is a game which requires the power of strategic thoughts and social skills by a guessing game. The ability to read people is essential to win the game. I would love to play it again this time we will pay more attention to the pros, ie Bing & Johnson.

Of course we all wanted to save our best laughter for The Prank of the night where we had to find a victim who hasn’t played the game, and that is me. I was told to participate in a banana eating competition “Blindfolded”. The others quietly moved away from the scene and I was pranked live on video cam.

All in all we had a really fruitful day of fun and fellowshipping, and then we went to hit the sack.

Day 2 – 16th December 2012

After a few hours of recharge, the bird watchers (Bing, Billy, Jack and Sheen Yee) get ready at 7am to head out to Jerai Resort for the fun and exciting bird watching. Sze Ling also went along with us, she wasn’t into bird watching but a short morning jog back to the resort.

It’s amazing to see the birds feeding on the moths. I’ve never seen anything like this before except on TV.  Bing explained to us on the name of the birds and taught us how to identify one. They are Spectacled Laughing Thrush, Javan Cukooshirike, Black and Crimson Oride, Lesser Racquet-tailed Drongo and Large Billed Crow just to name a few.  People from all over the world purposely pay thousands of dollars to go Fraser’s hill for bird watching and photography. We are lucky enough to have an expert to lend us the expensive binoculars for bird watching and also thought us on identifying birds for FREE. It’s priceless.

After 2 hours of fun in bird watching, we went back to the resort for breakfast. Sze Ling joined us few minutes after. We were learned that her short morning jog turned out to be 10KM+ for her, she took the wrong turn.  She took about 1 hour and 30 minute to reach the resort which I think it’s fast considering the distance she ran.

After the breakfast, we all went to the Smoke House which had been in Fraser’s Hill since World War I. It was built by the British. We had light refreshment, nice chat and plenty of photographs.  There was where our group photos were taken. Nice job, Nancy!

Overall, we all enjoyed the trip. Everyone had fun!

Meeting report for 'Time to Bloom'

Time to Bloom-a meeting develops by Lim Bing Yee ATMB...

Three months earlier a conversation between 'S.L and B.' ensued over scrumptious Korean food...

S.L.: So what can we do to make the meetings exciting?
B.: Why don't we have a 'Ladies Nite” only
S.L.: Yeah that would be guys!
B.: Think it'll be good to have all ladies speaking and do as many roles as possible.
S.L.: Yeah good idea, I'll suggest it to the committee.
B.: Ok let me know what happens. Gotta check to see if we have enough ladies to play roles. Send me the register please.
S.L: Will Do.

Two and a half-months earlier by Whatsapp an intelligent conversation continues...

S.L.: Ok the committee thought a Ladies Night would be a great idea. you be TME?
B.: Can, lah.
S.L.: Do you have a pic I can use to put up an advert on the website?
B.: Can, lah
S.L. You all right to get role players?
B.: Can, lah.
S.L.: Err sorry but I can't be there.
B.: Aiyah, no problem lah and thanks for all the stuff you've done so far.

Two weeks before meeting, to be held on the first Thursday of December, the intelligent conversation continues by Whatsapp...

B.: I've got all the role players sorted, Always like to get organised ahead of time.
S.L.: We don't have that many ladies in our club do we?
B.: Nope but don't worry, have sourced a quality lady TM from another club. She's good.
S.L.: But at least we have quality over quantity.
B.: Yep. And I like the mystery concept. Good to keep members guessing who our speakers are.
S.L.: So you're ready?
B.: Think so, will send out program via VK and let Boss know
S.L.: Good
B.: Now you go out and enjoy your holiday. We'll be right. Let you know how it goes.

The day after the meeting on the 6th December, Whatasapp connections continued between 'S.L and B'...

S.L.: Hi B! How was the meeting last night? I trust all went well
B.: Hey ho buddy. Meeting fab. A lot of guests. Possible sign ups. The mystery concept was fun. Our member N. T. last meet. We gave him a farewell card and had a good teh tarik afterwards.
S.L.: Last meet? Why? He returning to Australia?
B.: N. T. knew he was leaving. Sad huh but told him never be a stranger when you come back to KL for a visit.
S.L: Nice.
B.: And guess who dropped by? Our ex-member B X. Great to see him on hols and at meeting.
S.L.: Nice.
B.: Yep, meeting good. D'Utama always great to see friendly faces. Think Mr. resident J.Y will have videos and snippets of speakers and stuff. Check it out. Enjoy rest of hols. Don't forget to flash your best asset.
S.L.: My smile...
B.: Of course. :-) Catch you @ Frasers for 15...might go Tarantula hunting. Nite
S.L.: Can't wait. Yahoo Nite.

Meeting Report on November 2012 by Gan Teong Hock

Regular Meeting held on 29 November 2012

The meeting started on a slow note with less than twenty participants, due partly to a heavy downpour just before the meeting. However, the good news was most of the role players were already at KDU. Once again, the commitment and dedication of D’Utama members is demonstrated by the role players tonight. Well done and congratulations to all the role players for your dedication.

As the meeting progress, more participants joined in and we ended the meeting with slightly more than thirty participants. As your TME for this meeting, I wish to record my gratitude to each and every one of you for your time and effort to attend the meeting despite the rain and heavy traffic. Thank you for your contribution to the success of this meeting.

I am also indebted to our Area Governor, Tan Saw Bee, ATMG, ALB, for taking her time off to visit D’Utama and grace tonight’s meeting; and for playing the role as General Evaluator in the meeting.

For this meeting, I had chosen “Gratitude” as our meeting theme as a reminder to all of us to appreciate what we have. Mr President DTM Johnson Yike opened the meeting with a short but powerful Presidential opening address, reflecting on the meeting theme.

The meeting proper began, as usual, with the “Teh Tarik for the Soul” (invocation). The speaker, Toastmaster Jo Chung, spoke on the topic “simple comments may destroy the honours of someone.” She reminded the audience to be appreciative of others and to be cautious in our speeches for intentionally or otherwise, simple comments may destroy the honours of someone.

Besides being the invocation speaker, Jo Chung also doubled up as the second Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms (ASA) for the meeting, while Berry Eng was our ASA 1 for the meeting.

The first session of the meeting, the “Table Topics” session, was led by a fairly new member of the Club, Marilyn Lim. Marilyn has selected a variety of table topics befitting the theme “gratitude” and four table topics speakers spoke for the night: Nancy Liew, ACS, ALS; Chan Yew Chong; Jack Ng and Berry Eng. Nancy Liew was voted by the audience as the “Best Topic Speaker”.

Alex Tan, CC, was the table topics evaluator and he gave a wonderful dissection of all the four table topic speeches presented. This was followed by the humorous speech by the meeting’s humour master, Yip Wah Pung, DTM, who shared with us his adventure in Paris.

After the interval (during which light refreshment was served), the meeting resumed with the second session - the prepared speeches. We had four speakers for the night: Both Chee Fong Hoe and Chan Yew Chong presented their 6th competent communication manual projects (on “vocal varieties”) while Billy Low did his 7th (on “research your topic”). The 4th speaker, our Immediate Past President Steven Lai, CC, presented an advanced communication manual project (from the entertaining speaker manual.) The audience voted Steven as “Best Speaker”. Congratulations to all the four speakers for advancing by another speech in their Toastmasters journey.

Evaluation Session:

Evaluation Session:

After the prepared speech session, AG Saw Bee took control and led the third session, the evaluation session, as the GE. Besides table topics evaluator Alex Tan (who had already given his evaluation earlier), the evaluation team also comprised the four speech evaluators, Chai Wen Lee, CC (evaluated Chee Fong Hoe’s speech); Jason Chew, CC (Chan Yew Chong); Ruth Ting (Billy Low); and Nancy Liew, ACS, ALS (Steven Lai); the language evaluator (grammarian) Henry Fu, ACB, ALB; the ah counter Nick Tozer; and the time keeper VK Choong.

In line with the meeting theme, LE had chosen the word “indebted” as the word of the day. All the evaluators presented their evaluation based on the speech objectives and with insight. Jason Chew, CC, was voted by audience as the “Best Evaluator”.

The meeting ended with the guests comments before the Club conducted its business session, which included the admission of a new member, Jamaine Loo. Welcome to the Club, Jamaine.

I hope everyone in the meeting has enjoyed the meeting as much as I enjoyed hosting it - As the TME, I have thoroughly enjoyed the meeting.

Frasers' Hill Info
After a one and a half hours drive north-east of Kl you will reach Frasers' Hill. Enroute we will stop by the township of Kuala Kubu Baru(KKB) for refreshments and then continue our journey.
From the GAP the narrow road leads up 9km to the top.(drivers note that the one-way system that use to operate by time is now defunct). Coming down will be on the new road which is near our resort.

Frasers' is located on the Main Range at a height of 4000ft(1500m). A much cooler climate for walking about, breathing fresh air and chilling out. If we are lucky you can spot more than 250 species of birds, Dusky-leaf monkeys, Siamang(Largest Black gibbon in Malaysia), squirrels and a wild boar or two (or see their diggings of earth in the ground). Plants are plentiful with bright flowers blooming.
For food outlets there is the FOOD Court (local food) near the playground and a few restaurants near Puncak Inn. The more pricey places to eat of course is the Smokehouse. There are a couple of Sundry shops.

A Weekend in Saujana Janda Baik

A Weekend in Saujana Janda Baik

On 3rd - 4th November, nine of us decided to spend a weekend away in Janda Baik which was only an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur.

We had lunch at Restoran Chee Hong in Bukit Tinggi where we ordered the dishes recommended by the waitress. It was both Jamaine’s and Andrew’s first time trying the fried bacon in black sauce and it was apparently the restaurant’s signature dish! It was, in Jamaine’s own words “sumptuous”! It was one of the many delicious dishes Jack had ordered for everyone! When Andrew later found the sour soup being sold at the nearby stalls, he was beside himself with excitement. Some of us even bought the Bentong ginger which is known to be less fibrous than its regular ginger cousin.

We made our way up to Saujana Janda Baik after our hearty lunch. This trip was different from our regular trips --- the itinerary was completely open-ended! So we ended up playing games throughout the afternoon and any intention with regards to outdoor activities had to be quickly cancelled when torrential rains began pouring down. Even the thought of driving up to Genting had to be abandoned as by the time dusk fell, the roads were in pitch blackness. It would have been dangerous to drive to and fro in dark, slippery conditions.

So throughout the night (and this was Saturday night!), we played card games using variations of animal noises, names of capital cities, and names of cartoon characters. And we played relentlessly! It was a good thing that our accommodation was located in an isolated area as passers-by would have heard people shouting out strange names belonging to people and places that bore no relevance to the environment and bellowing out animal sounds ranging from horses neighing to pigs snorting to even wolves howling! The games truly tested our short-term memory skills and our ability to articulate non-human noises! Both Jack and Chee thought the silly card games were great fun, with Chee laughing like he hadn’t laughed in a long time and Wen Lee laughing till tears came to her eyes! Jack however thought it would have been better if we had imposed strict penalties for defaulters! A lot of us thought this was the best part of the trip.

The next morning was a leisurely one where we took a walk up the hill behind our house. Halfway through, Andrew and Wen Lee disappeared and the rest of us wondered what happened to the both of them! it was a good thing Wen Lee had her phone on her so we called her and the mystery of their short disappearance was quickly solved. They somehow found their way over to the other side of the hill! When they rejoined us, we spent some time by the river.

For Wen Lee, it was a retreat away from the hectic city life. The place we stayed in was isolated to the extent that we could not get much phone reception so there were hardly any incoming phone calls! At night, she found herself falling asleep to the soothing concert sounds of an insect orchestra

The trip was summed up by Marcus as “fun and relaxing. I had a good escape from the hectic life in town with inaccessible phone lines...kudos to Jack and Chee who drove us to this wonderful place.” Jamaine also thought it was a relaxing trip away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Levin definitely thought it was a truly enjoyable trip and hopes the club continues to organize such trips in the future!

Being the TME on 4th October 2012 - Goh Sheen Yee

Hosting a Toastmasters Regular Meeting and playing as a Toastmaster of the Evening (TME) on last Thursday (4 October) had been an adventurous ride for me. I had done this a couple times in the past (about 5 times) and I find that this time is a breakthrough for me in terms of my level of confidence and poise when I speak.

I managed to enjoy every moment while hosting the event. In fact, I was also overwhelmed that the evening turned out to be quite a meaningful meeting. I even remember the General Evaluator commented that “there is not a dull moment” throughout the two-and a half-hour meeting session.

About 5 months ago, I had the opportunity to be the TME, but it did not create a full impact on the audience as I was really agitated.I had spoken like a “Cho-Cho train” (super fast). With this precious opportunity to host a TM meeting again, I saw it as another new challenge for me; I reminded myself to speak slowly and patiently instead.

I set the theme: ‘It Takes Courage’ for the night’s meeting is because I was truly inspired by the great speakers who could stand up and share a part of themselves with the audience, their speech, aside from their great skills and quick thinking, they also need a tremendous amount of bravado. Choosing such a theme allows me to study “courage” and understand how courage can be garnered or found. I am grateful such a simple and easy theme could be well appreciated and enlightened the audience.

The evening would not have been successful without role players like the Language Evaluator ACB Hoo Sze Ling, who evaluated the quality of the use of the English language and her word of the day is “pristine”, our Invocator TM Billy Low, who shared with us a poem related to being courageous, our Table Topic Master TM Nick Tozer, who came out with 6 interesting topics related to courage, our Table Topic Evaluator ACB CL Henry Fu, who in spiteof the very short of time of preparation managed to “cook up” a good evaluation, our Humour Master TM VK Choong who managed to make us laugh at his rather lame-funny jokes, our Timekeeper TM Jack Ng who was very precise with his time keeping and our Ah-Counter ATMB Lim Bing Yee who to my surprise, could not find any pause fillers in the TME because she still spoke too fast! I would also like to recognise the much appreciated and precious role players ASA 1 TM Marilyn Lim and ASA 2 TM Chee Fong Hoe who ensured that the meeting was carried out smoothly without a kink.

Other than the abovementioned, our star for the second half of the meeting session: Speakers TM Chan Yew Choong, CC Steven Lai, and CC CL Marcus Loi. They prepared their speeches well and delivered them as they had intended.

Speech Title: Procrastinate And You Will...

Speech Title: Believe It Or Not

Speech Title: Pak Pandir

The evaluators for the speeches i.e. CC Chai Wen Lee, CTM Alex Tan and DTM G Jayam also did their best to point out commendable areas and areas of improvement for the speakers. The whole evaluation session was conducted by our General Evaluator DTM Yip Wah Pung who also doubled up as a “commentator / critique” for the night’s meeting.

I would like to thank everyone who attended the D’Utama meeting on 4th October, and all the role players who supported the evening. For members who could not make it that night, please do not be dismayed, there will always be meetings as interesting and refreshing as this one.
