The
Youth Leadership Programme (YLP) is a programme designed to inculcate
communication and leadership skills amongst the youth. This year, D’Utama
Toastmasters Club recently conducted the YLP on 29 & 30 March 2014 at Taylor ’s University
Lakeside Campus. Steven Lai was the Chief Coordinator leading the team who
ensured the success of the programme. We saw 18 young participants taking part
in the YLP.
Tarcayani was a
mentor on the YLP and had this to say: “'When
I first signed up to volunteer for the YLP, I did not know what to expect for
this was my first experience being involved in the YLP. I was told that I will
be mentoring a group of young people ranging from 12 to 18 year olds who are
generally shy and require some nurturing to break away from their shells. But
little did I know that these youngsters could teach me plenty and reinforce my
belief that everyone has a story to tell. From the ice-breaking session to the
feedback session at the end of day 1, I was astounded at the tremendous growth
in them. A profound incident that touched me was that one of the participants
who barely uttered a word during the ice breaking session ended up sharing an
inspirational story that aroused real emotions at the end of the day. To
me personally, the YLP experience has taught me that everything can be learnt
if you are willing to try. Just like the young children who broke out of their
comfort zone and spent their weekend to grow and learn public speaking skills.
I was inspired to break away from my own shell and experience new things. The
YLP is definitely an experience not to miss as it is a great opportunity to
help young people to better themselves and in doing so becoming better
individuals ourselves.”
