D’Utama Toastmasters Club turns 30!

DUtama Toastmasters Club turns 30!

There was no way that we were going to let our club’s 30th anniversary pass by without a celebration so we got a committee cracking their heads together to make this celebration happen.

D’Utama Toastmasters Club, thus was to celebrate its 30th anniversary and installation dinner at Boathouse Restaurant & Bar located along the famed pub street in Taman Tun Dr Ismail. The chef-owner of Boathouse and recently published author of the recipe book entitled Meatology published by MPH, Chef Yenni Law has been running the restaurant for over 11 years and known to D’Utama Toastmasters Club for some time. She had prepared a menu specially for this celebration.

And the theme was “Tropicalia”. Think beach, coconut trees and grass skirts.

The event was graced by the presence of several VIPS: the current District 51 Lieutenant-General for Education & Training, Sue Ding who is also the incoming District Director for the term 2015/2016; current Area D4 Governor for the term 2014/2015, Leong SooQi; current Division B Governor for the term 2014/2015, Lim Thian Seng, Incoming Division B Director for the term 2015/2016, Teoh Chun Ming (also the club’s Past President); Incoming Division D Director for the term 2015/2016, G. Sivalingam (also the club’s Past President).

Past Club Presidents were also present, namely; Allen Kam, G. Subra, Lee Wei Seong, Steven Lai, Johnson Yike, Nancy Liew, Hoo Sze Ling, and Gan Teong Hock.

Gan Teong Hock took the lead as the Game Master, ensuring that we were entertained during dinner. Enlisting the past presidents, current president as well as the incoming president, he elicited 3 pieces of information (or secrets!) from them each and subsequently made everyone guess the presidents based on the information he read out later. We could not have guessed the person based on the information given!

And we could not have excluded the Best Dressed Male and Female award for the night. These were the top 3 singled out for this category.

Best Dressed Male
Ryan Tang
Jason Lee
Chan Yew Choong

Best Dressed Female
Yvonne Yon
Tanya Tan
Jo Chung

It’s not easy to walk away as the Best Dressed! You have to earn it! All six contestants were made to walk from the first floor using the stairs and all the way to the designated stage. Some had a modest routine while some certainly knew how to rock a runway!

As is tradition, we also presented the Toastmaster of the Year (TOY) award at every installation event. This year’s award recipient is Choong Voon Kwong in recognition of his contributions to the club.

We had the incoming District Director, Sue Ding as the installation officer to install the Exco for the term 2015/2016:

1.  President-Elect          :          Jack Ng
2.  VPE-Elect                  :          Chan Yew Choong
3.  VPM-Elect                  :          VK Choong
4.  VPPR-Elect               :          Chee Fong Hoe
5.  Secretary-Elect         :          Jason Lee
6.  Treasurer-Elect         :          Argustin Mok
7.   SAA-Elect                :          Lee Boon Wei
8.   IPP                           :          Henry Fu

Committee Member Ryan Tang was also installed.

Incoming Club President, Jack Ng delivered his speech right after the installation. He revealed his theme for the next term which is “No Mountain Is Too High”. He related how he faced numerous personal challenges over the last term but was able to overcome them in the end.

He relayed his vision for the club for next term which was to raise RM5000 for the club finances, and strengthening the bond among members. Funds raised would go towards activities to be conducted next term to build relationship amongst members. We certainly all liked the sound of that! Jack has also announced that the club would achieve the 10 out of 10 DCP goals by end of March 2016. A tough feat, some may say this to be but given our club’s track record of having achieved 10 out of 10 DCP points and President’s Distinguished Club for more than 10 consecutive years, we would surely have no problem supporting our Incoming President’s vision and mission for the club in the next term!

It was an intimate and lively dinner for all of us that night, decked in our beachwear and fun Toastmasters spirit!

A snapshot of the menu for the night - Two thumbs up!

He was also District Secretary for the term 2003/2004, when District 51 was the largest in the world, covering as many as 7 countries comprising of Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, Hong Kong and Macau.

During the upcoming term, G. Sivalingam will be overseeing 5 Areas. The clubs that will be under Division B are:

Division D Director : Sivalingam Ganasalingam(00328495)
Area D1 Director : Mirosha Somasundram(03364800)
Area D2 Director : Jade Lim Lay Yoke(00929297)
Area D3 Director : Sea Shin Tyun(01055541)
Area D4 Director : Lam Kheng Yeen(01564572)

NOTE: The final line up will be that listed on Toastmasters International website on 1 July 2015, as that is when the list of suspended clubs will be finalised.

1. What do you think the role of Division Director is all about?

I think its about being a steward for all the Clubs in the Division for that one year, and leaving the Division in a stronger position when I step at the end of the 12 months. Stronger in the sense that the Clubs are growing in terms of membership, and educational awards, but most importantly that the Clubs are places where people feel it is worth their time to be in.

2. What are the challenges and opportunities do you see awaiting Division D in the next term?

On the challenge side the Division is very small, as I have only 13 living Clubs, and a Division is supposed to have around 20 Clubs. On the opportunity side it is much easier to grow from a small base, and easier to connect with a small group of Clubs and share the vision of where to go.

3. What do you hope to achieve as Division D Director?

I only have 2 Key Performance Indicators for my Division Team:
1.Identify a successor for each position by 30 April 2016, e.g. my own successor, and the successors for each of the Area Directors.
2.Have 20 Clubs with Presidents Distinguished Club status by 30 May 2016.

4. What made you take up this role? What do you hope to get out of it?

I have been in Toastmasters for a very long time, playing various roles, and learning the ropes for a long time.  I was waiting for the right time to commit to a leadership role when I had an epiphany and realised that there would never be a perfect time, and time would just keep passing by. That was when I finally made the decision to go for the post, and this was just a few days before the Conference itself.

What I hope to do is create something, as Ive always admired people who can dance, or paint, or create art in some form or another. Ive never done those things so you could say this is my own personal art piece, although like art, its going to be transitory as one year from now someone else will fill the position, but thats ok. I just want to create and make a difference for myself, and not for anyone else.

5. Is there any formidable District Leader who inspires you in your own leadership track?

One name immediately springs to mind-Past District 51 Governor Christopher Teo of Singapore.  I admire him as he was not a charismatic leader, and he followed in the footsteps of a very charismatic District Governor.  When he tried to be charismatic he didnt do very well as that was not who he was. When he realised that and gave up trying to be charismatic, and just concentrated on being who he was, which was a hard working man, who cared about the people under his wings, that was when he achieved success, in my eyes, and in many other eyes as well.  To me, he was one of the best District Governors ever, and to a large extent, I have tried to emulate him.

We wish G. Sivalingam all the best in his new role for the term 2015/2016!
