Bringing Down The Curtain: Final Meeting of 2016 - Make It Happen

D'Utama Toastmasters Club (DUTMC) held their final meeting of the year 2016.

The meeting was graced by a total of 33 members and non-members alike in what was also a Christmas-themed meeting. A total of 25 members & 8 guests were present during the meeting as it was conducted with a certain glee  and gusto from the Toastmasters of the Evening (TME), Lim Bing Yee, ACS with her theme of the evening, Make It Happen.

The meeting started on time at 7:40PM and was called to order by the acting ASA-2 of the night, Jo Chung, CC as she led the room to a club customary practice, singing of Negaraku -- the Malaysian national anthem --, and getting guests to introduce themselves.

ASA-2 of the evening, Jo Chung (CC), calling the meeting to order.

The acting president of the evening, Azlan Hateem (TM), who is also the current club Vice-President of Public Relations then took over to deliver his address to kick-start the meeting. In his delivery, he spoke about his 2016 and what he made happen during the year. He further inspired the crowd with his take-away message of to constantly keep on moving and keep making things happen in the future.

Acting president, Azlan Hateem (TM), delivering his keynote address to kick-start the meeting.

The meeting then stepped-up one gear as the lively Toastmaster of the Evening (TME), Lim Bing Yee (ACS) took control of the meeting. Always living in the realm of the unpredictability, she got the crowd moving when she requested everyone in the audience to stand up and give high fives among each other as an energizer. The word of the day, "Stereotype", was then introduced by Palash Ray, the Language Evaluator (LE) of the night.

"I wish I could fly." Toastmaster of the Evening (TME), Lim Bing Yee (ACS), making it happen.

Keeping things moving, the TME then introduced Jan Siong Lim (TM) to carry out the role as Table Topic Master (TTM) of the evening. Four valiant speakers, Kris Sonsin (CC), Geena Poon (TM), Palash Ray (TM), and guest Adzenser took the challenge and delivered their take on the topics presented by the TTM in splendid fashion.

The meeting then proceeded to honor a club tradition by conducting a new membership acceptance ceremony. Dionnald Beh, a recently joined Toastmaster, was given his club handbook and was presented the customary guard of honor by both members and non-members alike.

"I didn't expect this, but this feels nice" whispered Dionnald to himself whilst standing proudly beside the club president.

Just like any other D'Utama Toastmasters meeting, this too promised not to be a dull one. Never one like the other, the audience were presented by a short skit performed by the TME & club VPPR, Azlan Hateem. The hilarious skit, featuring Bing & Azlan was intended in announcing to the members of the club of an upcoming overnight trip to Port Dickson in the month of January 2017. The meeting then went a short break before heading into the second session of the night, the prepared speeches session.

An acting career is imminent for both Toastmasters.

Moving on to a more serious part of the meeting, the prepared speech session featured four speakers in which three speakers attempted from the Competent Communication (CC) Manual, and one from the Advanced Communication (AC) manual - Special Occasion Speeches.

Prepared Speech Speaker #1 - Dionnal Beh, TM: I Am a Keyboardist and Mousist

Prepared Speech Speaker #2 - Reuben Thum, TM: Fantastic Pieces and How to Craft Them

Prepared Speech Speaker #4 - Amonre Chew, CC: Keep Calm and Get Married

With every speech comes and evaluation. The General Evaluator (GE) of the evening, Steven Lai (CC, CL) [a.k.a the serious reindeer], took control of the meeting at 9:26PM to lead the evaluation session together with his team of evaluators. The esteemed speech evaluators of the night were Ryan Tang (TM), Lim Mei Ching (TM), Chai Wen Lee (ACB, CL), and Allen Kam (ACS, CL) respectively. The technical evaluators consist of Palash Ray as the Language Evaluator, Kris Sonsin (CC) as the Ah-Counter,

Experienced D'Utama Toastmaster, Past-president, Allen Kam (ACS, CL), in his stride

We weren't lying about "The Serious Reindeer" part.

The meeting ended with the award-presentations session to the best speakers of the night and was closed off by club president, Chan Yew Choong (ACB), as he delivered his final presidential closing speech of the year 2016. The group then gathered together for one huge group photo to wrap up the year.

Meeting fun fact: There were a total of five mother-and-son combo in the meeting tonight. A club record for sure. D'Utama, a club for both the young and the seasoned.

Overall, it was a great ending to the year for D'Utama Toastmasters Club as we look ahead to further carry the spirit of camaraderie, fellowship, and family onto the year 2017. But that's not quite the end..

D'Utama Evening Tea Series: Get to Know the President

Get to Know the President

Chan Yew Choong, CC, ACB, first visited a Toastmasters Club back in 2005. Fast forward 11 years later, he is now the President of a stellar 31 year old club of D'Utama Toastmasters Club.

D'Utama spoke to Yew Choong to get to know him better as well as his understanding his future plans and direction for the club.

Tell us about yourself.

I have been helping people to save for rainy days via insurance and retirement planning for more than 12 years. I have been a Toastmasters since May 2012.

I was an ordinary member for a month or two before being roped into becoming part of the executive committee (exco) as the Secretary. I was then the Treasurer the following term before becoming the Vice-President of Membership, Vice-President of Education, and now, the President.

What made you join Toastmasters?
I joined Toastmasters because I wanted to learn about public speaking. I am required to communicate with people from all walks of life in my full-time profession. Other than this, I enjoy attending meetings. I find it rather relaxing whilst at the same time be entertained by the speeches delivered after a hard day's work. Also, I enjoy meeting new people at the meeting and learn a thing or two from them about life.

What makes you passionate about Toastmaster?
Having realised how much my overall communication skills have improved just after being in the club for just a year, I knew then that there are many more things to gain from the Toastmasters experience. Furthermore, by playing different roles at each meeting, I am better able to practice my listening and evaluating skills as well as how to express my points within a stipulated time via time management.

By being part of the club's exco, I am able to see from the inside what it takes to run a Toastmasters club. Further more, by becoming taking up different roles in the exco, I am able to learn the function of each exco and apply it in my daily life. For example, I learned how to do book keeping when I was the treasurer and learned how to keep records when I was the secretary.

The warmth and friendliness of the members in welcoming you at the meeting makes every meeting a meeting to look forward to. I have benefited from the ever-readiness and sincerity of the members in sharing how I can be better at delivering my speeches. This makes me want to do the same for the other members. The merry and positive environment at each meeting helps me to recharge after a hard day's work.

D'Utama TM has seen many years, boasting over 30 years of exemplary Toastmastership. How do you see D'Utama moving forward?
The club is what it is today because of its members. The members, having benefited from the Toastmasters program, are dedicated in ensuring that each meeting is a meeting of quality. When each meeting is a quality meeting, the chances of a guest becoming a club member is higher. When this happens, the drive for better meetings continues due to the sincere energy contributed by the members. This is a cycle, and the cycle is what has kept the club the way it is for the past 30 years. I aim to continue, and wherever possible, better this cycle.

Any messages for new members and about-to-be members about Toastmasters?
Like life, Toastmasters is a journey. There are members who have been with the club for more than 20 years and they still have the passion to be part of it because they know that this journey has and will continue to help them grow. Ask what you want to learn and achieve from Toastmasters and tell it to the other members or the excos. You can be assured that you will be provided with the most appropriate assistance there is. Remember to come to the meeting whether you are playing a role or not. You also learn by being part of the audience. If you ever feel reluctant to participate in meetings, just remember why you wanted to join Toastmasters in the first place and you'll definitely rediscover the passion.

"Ignite that passion. Ignite your passion, and shine."

Toastmaster Lim Bing Yee reveals her cookbook on how to produce a delicious fellowship trip with D'Utama Toastmasters!

D'Utama's Recipe to Chill

1. Find an empty room in Selesa Hills.

2. Fill it up with ten adventurous Toastmasters and a half.

3. Let them eat and chat ensuring they are fed on the hour and every hour!

4. Drink copious amount of peach tea.

5. Dangle a 'Durian' carrot to entice the to go for a short walk.

6. Teach them how to tee off like Tiger woods from Tee Box no.10.

7. Return to apartment ready for the BBQ of the century!

8. Eat, drink, and be merry as we watch our darling Olympic Dato' Lee Chong Wei battle it out. (despite the loss, he's still our champ no matter what)

9. Allow sleeping beauties to retreat to their Land of ZzzZzzzZ while the die-hards take over the balcony to exercise their jaws until 1:00AM!

10. Smile at the three early-risers who arose to see the pinkish ray of sunrise filter across the sky.

11. Take a short walk around Selesa Hill home to see what is around the place.

12. Return to apartment to a flurry of breakfast preparation going on.

13. Ear heartily and get the late-risers (100% males by the way) to finish off food.

14. Chat, chill and chat some more.

15. Have lots of fun and laughter during the Selesa Hill Table Topics session where Jack wins a melon!

16. Sadly pack up and clean up apartment and say 'Bye....till the next time'

17. Head to a famous restaurant for lunch in Bukit Tinggi.

18. Feel totally satisfied with mind and heart filled with delicious "food" for the soul. Adieu kind friends of D'Utama~
